About Us

We commenced our practice in 1972 as “Chopra & Associates”. We have been handling cases in the Apex Court for more than a 3 decades now. Our presence throughout the country through our offices in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Delhi, Faridabad, Noida, Chandigarh and New York, help us in representing different clients from all parts of the country and abroad including the NRIs and OCI card holders.

All You Need to Know About the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is the highest court in the hierarchy of courts with its seat in Delhi. It has the appellate jurisdiction for all cases which means that it can hear appeals from the High Court in both criminal and civil matters. It is the court of record and all its judgements and orders are binding on all the lower courts including the High Courts across the country. The court has the power to punish for its contempt (non-obeyance of its orders or for undermining its authority).

The Supreme Court has the power to review its own decisions and also has power to issue writs under Article 32 when the fundamental rights of a person are infringed.

Jurisdiction of the Supreme Court

• • Original Jurisdiction

The Supreme Court is the federal court of the land which means it has the jurisdiction to hear cases in between the Centre and one or more states; or the Centre and any state or states on one side and one or more states on the other; or between two or more states. It has the exclusive jurisdiction to handle such cases.

• • Writ Jurisdiction

The Supreme Court has the power to issue writs in case the fundamental rights of a citizen are infringed. This jurisdiction is not exclusive as High Courts also have the power to issue writs under Article 226. The Supreme Court has an Original jurisdiction in this regard which means that a person can approach the Supreme Court directly, without approaching the lower court.

• • Appellate Jurisdiction

The Supreme Court has the power to hear appeals against the judgements of the lower courts. The appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court is very wide and includes appeals from-
